  With the release of AMD Ryzen 7000 series, which supports PCIe 5.0 for the first time, consumer-grade PCIe 5.0 SSDs have attracted market attention.


  Compared with PCIe 4.0 SSD, PCIe 5.0 SSD can provide faster speed and higher performance. At present, the speed of PCIe 4.0 flagship SSD can reach more than 7GBps, while the speed of consumer-grade PCIe 5.0 SSD can reach 10GBps or even 12.4GBps.


  However, at present, the speed of 12.4GBps is an ideal state, only a few products can achieve it, and most consumer-grade PCIe 5.0 SSDs maintain a speed of around 10GBps. According to foreign media TomsHardware, this is mainly due to insufficient capacity of related flash memory chips.


  Most of the current consumer-grade PCIe 5.0 SSDs use the Phison E26 series main control chip. This main control chip has 8 NAND channels and can support different data transfer rates, with a maximum of 12.4GBps. Achieving this speed requires a 3D NAND chip with an I/O transfer rate of 2400 MTps.


  Although some original factories have launched 2400 MTps 3D NAND chips, they are facing the problem of mass production. For example, Micron officially announced this year that 232-layer 3D NAND chips will be mass-produced, with an I/O transfer rate of up to 2400 MTps. However, the yield rate of 3D NAND chips at 2400 MTps is too low. If it is reduced to 1600 MTps, the chip yield will be greatly improved.


  In order to ensure stable supply and control costs, many manufacturers choose to buy Micron 1600 MTps NAND chips, so the speed of PCIe 5.0 SSD is limited to about 10GB/s.


  TomsHardware said that Micron will take some time to mass produce 2400 MTps NAND chips, which may be expected early next year.
